FAQS

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy, also called talk therapy, is a way to help people with a broad variety of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties. Psychotherapy can help eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase well-being and healing.

What should I expect in the first session?

Nervous about the first visit? No worries! Most people are. The first session allows us to meet and get to know each other. We’ll explore what areas of your life you are looking to work on and we’ll discuss how to best support you. You get to ask questions too!

Payment and payment plans?

I accept cash, credit cards, and for your convenience, I offer recurring monthly payment options that save you money. Consults are free and must be scheduled.

Do you accept insurance?

AS of June 1st, 2020, I will no longer accept insurance because of the red tape that these organizations often put on the consumer and provider.

Is there a cancellation policy?

If you have to cancel, I ask that you honor my time commitments and other fellow clients, by canceling no less than 48hrs before the session. That gives other fellow clients the opportunity to take your time slot. Once you cancel, you can reschedule the session at your earliest convenience but please try to schedule on a date that is close to your canceled session so that we may keep our regularity and process going. Thanks in advance and I am always looking forward to reconnecting with you.

My problem is _______. How would you go about helping me?

In the first session we discuss the 'process' in a way that you can understand it, while co-creating a safe and comfortable space for you to talk about anything you'd like to bring up. This is a judgment-free zone where you get to be you and I get to be me. We’ll explore what your goals are and how we'll get there. Mostly using CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and training in Mindfulness,  you’ll get the skills that will help you deal with life and relationships.

What is expected of me as a client?

Healing requires your active participation and honesty. During the initial phase of therapy, we will meet more often. If you are open to it, you may be asked to read materials specifically addressing the issues you may be dealing with. The added tools can change your life and move your healing process forward.

How active are you in the session?

I am actively engaged in conversation with you. I am present with you. This helps us explore the problems you’ve experienced, heart to heart. This is a  wonderful opportunity for healing and it requires both our engagement.

Have you been in therapy?

Yes, and it is one of the best decisions I ever made! We don't even need to have a specific problem to start therapy.

Why do people go to group therapy? What's the difference?

In groups, we develop communication skills, understand ourselves in relation to others, and it’s a safe place to build community. All group members are carefully selected prior to entering the group.

What are dysfunctional automatic thoughts?

We feel the way we think. Intense negative thinking is always accompanied by an intense emotion such as sadness or anxiety. Our moody thoughts are entirely different than our feelings but are the root cause of our feelings. It is not the actual event or situation but our perceptions that result in changes in mood.

What is Teletherapy or telehealth?

If you think we may be a good fit for but live outside of the city, or you are unable to get to the appointment, telethealth is a great solution that provides privacy and convenience for people. We can speak on a protected health site, virtually in real time.

What is cognitive behavioral therapy?

Cognitive behavioral therapy also known as CBT is a highly practical and effective intervention for people with various problems. This type of therapy helps to identify and address the behaviors and thinking patterns that cause and maintain an underlying problem. Numerous studies show that CBT is just as effective as medication, 75% of people experience a decrease in symptoms, within two years post therapy (Leahy & Holland, 2001).

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a biofield therapy that works directly with the subtle energy field that surround the body. It is is the most common form of biofield therapy and has become widespread in the past 10 years. Practitioners use about 13 hand positions on the body, often corresponding to chakra positions. It has no agenda and is not tied to any specific religion. Reiki has become an integral part of hospital care around the country. Reiki has been shown to help with recovery after hospital procedures, stress reduction and prevention, anxiety, depression, pain reduction, improve resilience and boost and support the body’s immunity, and for physical and mental health support for patients.  ACA (June 12, 2019).

Can you teach me Reiki?

As a Reiki Practitioner, I understand that everyone has the ability to connect with their own healing energy, and use it to strengthen the flow of ki/chi. I offer workshops to help you heal yourself. The ability to channel Reiki energy is transferred to the student by the Reiki Master/Facilitator during an attunement process. If you one has not received an attunement, you are not utilizing Reiki but something else.

What should I expect in a Reiki session?

A session is usually 45 to 60 minutes long. During your initial consultation with me, we will discuss any particular problems or issues you are experiencing and explore what you are hoping to achieve. In the session, you’ll rest comfortably on a massage table and experience deep relaxation. The client is always fully clothed, comfortable clothing recommended.
